WELCOME

The Center of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) is pleased to announce the Fifth Symposium on Infectious Diseases to be held at the Melia Marina Varadero Hotel, Varadero, Cuba, from October 23th to October 26th, 2020.

The Fifth Symposium on Infectious Diseases would be a moment of vital importance for the exchange between Cuban scientists and their respective counterparts in the international arena. In this case, Cuban researchers could obtain knowledge about the state of the art in terms of research, vaccines, therapies, animal models and methodologies used in the field of infectious diseases. In this context, the opportunity could be given not only to acquire new knowledge but also to promote a possible scientific collaboration in projects such as HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, Dengue Virus, Zika Virus and Pertussis. These collaborations could have a positive impact on the progress of the projects, since they would allow obtaining relevant results in the evaluation of the efficacy of several CIGB's vaccine candidates. Such results are not possible to obtain in our country, since the required technology is not available. On the other hand, the CIGB, in tune with the international policy of the government of Cuba, is characterized by solidarity aid to the countries of the region. Therefore, the development of a vaccine or therapy against these infectious diseases would benefit countries in region and even countries in other parts of the world.

Topics
  • Immune response to infectious diseases.
  • Prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines against Hepatitis B, C, HIV, Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya and Yellow fever.
  • Advances in diagnosis, vaccines and therapies against bacterial and parasitical infectious diseases: malaria and pertussis.
  • Antiviral drugs against viral Hepatitis, HIV and circulating arboviruses.
  • Analytical systems, animal models and novel cell culture strategies for the study of infectious pathogens.
  • State of art on viral life cycle: entry, replication and virus-host cell interactions; as a mean for the identification of putative targets for the development of novel antivirals.

The CIGB is located in the west side of Havana City and together with other nearby scientific research centers integrates what is best known as the 'west Havana scientific pole'. This research center was opened in July 1st, 1986. During these more than 25 years several new vaccines and pharmaceutical drugs for human health has been developed and are currently in use in the Cuban Health System. The CIGB is 15 minutes from José Martí International Airport and 20 minutes from Havana downtown by car. The geographic position of CIGB is showed with a red circle in the map below.
